Coaching services as an effective and adaptable learning solution.

The number of personalized and goal-oriented coaching is increasing as an effective means of maintaining continuous learning throughout the organization. According to the recent study by the Human Capital Institute (HCI) and Lee Hecht Harrison (LHH) on the status of coaching in organizations because of its "customized individual approach", coaching is increasingly recognized not so much as a remedy to fix behavior, but as an advanced, developmental solution.

The report, "Scaling Executive Coaching Across the Enterprise: The Key to Developing Tomorrow's Talent" is based on a survey of approximately 4,000 HCI members representing more than 230 organizations around the world. For the purposes of the study, HCI and LHH defined coaching as "a developmental method based on improving performance through introducing new knowledge, skills, and behaviors, and is characterized by an individual relationship between a leader and an external coach".

For a baseline, the survey asked organizations to describe how they implemented coaching. Nearly 60% report that their executives meet with an external coach or consultant when needed, while only 33% state that executives meet regularly with an external coach.

In addition, 32% of the organizations report that coaching is not limited to senior executives. The study indicates that other employees receiving internal coaching are 50% first-level managers and 57% midlevel managers.

Testing the effectiveness of coaching!

The study also tested the effectiveness of coaching in improving critical business processes. Although coaching proved to be highly effective in improving communications skills and conflict management, it was not as successful when it comes to change management, strategic thinking, and performance management.

The report states that "Regardless of the organization or its current development structure, in order to adequately use the development skill that coaching can provide, organizations must prioritize gaining a deeper and clearer understanding of what coaching can truly accomplish."

Challenges and constraints associated with implementing organizational coaching include 78% lack of resources, 68% lack of time for executives, 66% lack of senior management support, and 40% lack of knowledge on how to implement it.

In addition to the lack of application of experience and skill, 69% of respondents say that their organizations have not established coaching guidelines for managers.

The report notes that while there is evidence that coaching can be a powerful development strategy to be successful, it requires coordination and agreement among human resources working in the field of organization development, and senior managers about the benefits of coaching, and "enough structure in place to address what the organization needs in a consistent and accountable way".
